Yandex launched its free addition to the numerous companies trying to offer the best cloud storage from Russia in April of 2012 by invitation only to Yandex.Mail users, but has since created an English and Turkish version. In September of the same year, Yandex offered 10 GB of free storage space to any user. The company controls about sixty percent of the Russian market and sets its sights on other markets as it expands globally. One of its greatest competitors is Google, though Yandex is finding success in markets in which Google is not focusing, such as those outside of Europe.
The Yandex app is available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android, and Android Tab. Supporting operating systems include Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It is already being preloaded on Samsung Ultrabooks in Russia with 250 GB of free storage for life to Ultrabook buyers. Future projects include more Yandex service integration, public folders, support for file versioning, media and document previewing (it already supports music previewing), and one-to-one file sharing
Yandex.Disk Cloud Storage Price
Yandex.Disk is free to all users and does not have a restriction on the length of time users can store their files. Each subscriber starts with 3 GB but can have as much as 10 GB by uploading files and referring friends who become subscribers.
Pros of Yandex.Disk Cloud Storage
Yandex.Disk saves data on a virtual folder and can be accessed and viewed from a desktop or mobile device. One of the benefits of Yandex.disk’s service is that it is simple and straightforward. Data transfers from devices such as cell to computer from any location with just an Internet connection and photos are available on all devices. WebDAV support means that subscribers can manage their files with any supported WebDAV application. It is advised for Linux and FreeBSD users to upload their files with that application.
Cons of Yandex.Disk Cloud Storage
Yandex is a small market focused in certain areas that are not dominated by larger services such as Google. In order to add storage space, subscribers must upload files and recruit friends to the service. Additional space after 10 GB is not available, even for purchase.
Yandex.Disk subscribers have voiced their dissatisfaction with the service. Complaints have include a lack of stability with file uploads and interrupted downloads. Others have complained that they are not able to change their file status from their phone. One of the greatest areas of concerns of Yandex.Disk users comes from issues such as lack of security and poor customer service. Subscribers mention their attempts to contact someone for assistance, especially in areas of online privacy, but often they cannot reach anyone.
In spite of the few poor reviews, Yandex.Disk has predominantly positive reviews and acknowledgement on community forums. As one of the newer cloud services that removed its beta designation shortly thereafter, it offers a large amount of storage space for free. As it continues to grow, it is unknown how long they will be able to maintain that large amount for free.
